What can you do to help a neighbor in need?

We have all struggled through this current economy, but none more than our local low-income homeowners. These elderly widows, single moms, returning veterans, families with children and persons with disabilities spend a disproportionate amount of income on housing costs, a percentage that has only continued to rise with theuptick in utility bills.

Whether you pick up a hammer or pick up a pen, your support of Rebuilding Together Henry County plays a huge role in revitalizing the lives and homes of our area neighbors in need.

Through your financial support, you can help more families like Rick and Diane, a Vietnam-era veteran and his wife, who last year knew that every time it rained or the snow melted, water would stream through their kitchen light fixture, thanks to their leaking roof. Stuck between paying for home repairs or their mounting medical bills due to several health issues, Rick and Diane worked on paying their bills and hoped the house would hold a little longer. Then Rebuilding Together Henry County came by with a group of 25 volunteers, purchased and donated supplies and rebuilt the roof structure and re-sided the entire home.

“I just wanted to let you know … it rained and we had NO leaks!!
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

You may not have picked up the hammer at Rick and Diane’s house last April, but your support and donations allowed us to help them, along with 22 additional homeowners and two nonprofits last year. We have installed windows, doors and insulation to reduce utility bills for families with children, replaced flooring to prevent tripping hazards for our elderly neighbors and added grab bars, handrails and wheelchair ramps for persons with mobility issues.

And what can you do to help? Your financial contribution will help other families like Rick and Diane, so they, too, can live in a safe and dry home. As an example, $25 may buy paint to replace the coat peeling off a homeowner’s walls; $50 may purchase grab bars and handrails to help an elderly person live at home; $100 may purchase wallboard and supplies to repair water damage from a leaking roof. A donation of $250 may help us repair unsafe electrical wiring, lighting and outlets while $500 may purchase wood for a wheelchair ramp module that can be re-used through multiple installations.

And while we are proud of the project at Rick and Diane’s house, we are not an organization to rest on its past projects. On Saturday, April 24, we will host our 16th Rebuilding Day. We not only invite you to come out and help on our projects but to financially support our work. This year we have seven projects in four towns, including installing windows and doors, replacing more leaking roofs, reframing walls and doors, repairing windstorm damage, and replacing and repairing wallboard damage from leaks. In addition to our work day projects, we have already installed five wheelchair ramps this year along with providing homemodifications for an additional five homeowners with mobility issues.

Again, thank you for supporting Rebuilding Together Geneseo/Cambridge. Your financial contribution means we will help even more families, senior citizens, veterans and persons with disabilities live in warm, safe and dry homes.
